Equipment

Street Pilot III Deluxe
This has become a very popular GPS for APRS Mobile. It was originally very expensive but a great bit of gear and possible to bought second-hand from Ebay at a reasonable price. These sorts of items are now well-priced with people replacing them for the likes of Tom Tom, which are not suitable for APRS.
Handheld Radios

Yaesu VX-8R Handheld
Although there were initial teething problems when this rig was launched with recalls, these problems have been sorted and it is now by the far the handheld of choice for anyone wanting to use a handheld on APRS. It offers much improvements on Kenwood's dated and now discontinued TH-D7 handheld. With a separately purchased GPS microphone, Yaesu offer an ultra-rugged all-in-one solution without the hassle of needing an external TNC or GPS. The VX-8R supports 1200/9600bps APRS. It also supports Bluetooth hands-free operation.

Kenwood TH-D7 Handheld
Although this radio has been discontinued by Kenwood, it can be purchased second-hand. As yet Kenwood have not brought a replacement but we wait with baited breath to see if they can do better than the VX-8R. The radio has an output power of around 6w when plugged into a 13.8v power supply. You can operate on APRS while using the radio for voice on 70cms. The main disadvantage with the radio is that with the power output of only 6w so it does not work too well out in the country where there are no discreetness. It can however be used with an external linear. The radio also operates with a internal TNC so you can plug it into a normal computer and use either 1200/9600 Packet.
Mobile Radios

Kenwood TM-D700E Mobile
This VHF/UHF mobile FM radio has far more features than the TH-D7 and can transmit 50w on APRS. APRS and voice can be used at the same time.
This radio is now discontinued but has been replaced by the Kenwood TM-D710E Mobile.

Kenwood TM-D710E Mobile
This radio replaces the TM-D700E and is VHF/UHF mobile FM transceiver with APRS and EchoLink functionality. It offers 50w on both bands and comes with weather station functionality. Although for most, the Echolink feature will be unused, partly as it is such a good rig that it seems a waste to tie it up for Echolink, it is still there for anyone who needs it. As with the TM-D700, it requires an extermal GPS to work on APRS.
