Our Values

We believe that a successful web site gets the message across as easily as possible; there are many web design techniques and features that should be used cautiously on a professional site.

Flash

Flash can be a useful tool in advertising banners but we believe it is inappropriate to build an entire web site out of it. It is difficult to keep the site up-to-date and can create accessibility problems for many people. We like to keep the site as simple as possible. Although most people now have the Macromedia Flash plug-in, we do not think it is good business practice to exclude a potential client. Sadly some sites are more style than contents this will hinder people from returning in the future and particularly if it took them a long time to download it on a dial up modem. Our motto is to keep it simple.

Animated graphics

If you have ever tried to read a web site with a spinning "@" sign in the corner, you will know how annoying it can be. We feel that most animations do not add to the overall information of the page and therefore are unnecessary, as they are a distraction from the text.

JavaScript

Not everyone is able to appreciate JavaScript within a web page; whether this be because they have it turned off in the options of their browser, their browser does not support it or because they have visual difficulties and use a screen reader. JavaScript can create navigation issues if the menu relies on this with no other method of navigating the site and hide contents from these users. In many cases on the Internet, the use of JavaScript has been unnecessary such as in "mouse rollover buttons" and JavaScript hyperlinks. We think that JavaScript should be used warily.

Tasteful colour schemes

There are many web sites out there with difficult to read text because the colours chosen were inappropriate. White text on a light yellow background will never work. Even if the site's text is readable, colour and size is important so that banners and headings are not lost in the page. We feel that backgrounds should be kept subtle so they remain in the background.

Pop-up windows

We do not like to use pop-ups because a lot of people find them annoying and instantly close them. Other web users have them blocked by their software from even appearing. This is an ineffective way of getting across information because the user does not absorb any of the contents as it tends to be dismissed readily. A more thoughtful web site design would allow for this information to be included in the main pages so avoiding a pop-up imposing itself on the user's desktop.
